Nearly 2000 runners made their way to the shores of Asbury Park for the 12th Annual Asbury Park 5K this weekend. Tie-dyed shirts and high spirits filled the iconic beach town Saturday morning as the race played host to stop # 4 of the Jersey Shore Grand Prix Series.
The race was won by Mahwah’s Kyle Levermore who took the tape in an impressive 15:01. Hometown Asbury legend Amanda Marino was equally impressive winning the women’s race in 18:31.
But this race isn’t about the elites. There are hundreds of stories worth celebrating like Joe Domagala, who completed his first race ever this weekend. Joe is 63 pounds lighter than when he started running a few months back. When asked about the race he said, “I was a little apprehensive, but I really enjoyed. It was over before I knew it.” This race will likely be the first of many in a long career for Joe.
We also learned the story of fellow runner Brian Marley, who loves this race for its “Totally amazing & unique crowd”. Joe has been running races at the shore for 23 consecutive years. Even his battles with Hodkins Lymphoma didn’t stop this dedicated runner from keeping the streak alive.
Congrats to all the runners and be sure to check back soon as we will be posting tons more pictures over the next few days.
