Best Advice Ever For The NYC Marathon

So…you registered for the New York City Marathon, the greatest race on the planet.  You have trained, figured out your transportation plan and you are enjoying the taper with restless excitement, counting down the days.  The last thing you have to do is finalize that playlist so that the right song is cranking to help you push through the wall and meander through the rolling hills of Central Park.

We have a cool way for you to organize your music, ideally suited for NYC.  Since its the home of so many great artists, organize your playlist by Borough.  You can time it out so whatever Borough you are will have music playing from an artist from that Borough.

Here is how we are setting ours up:

Staten Island

When heading over the Verrazano Bridge, get your heart pumping with the Wu Tang Clan and some Method Man to start your race off strong.

Brooklyn

The choices are endless for …

Best Race Ever…Nova Nordisk NJ Marathon and Half Marathon Preview

We caught up with Christine Bosco, the Race Director for this Sunday’s Nova Nordisk NJ Marathon and Half who was kind enough  to share her thoughts on the event. She is tremendously excited about the event and it promises to be a great one. This year marks the 20th anniversary of one of the greatest races on the planet. Bosco expressed her appreciation for both the spectators as well as the athletes for their participation. She also commended the 8 municipalities that the race passes through for all their help and support. While the 5k is full, registration is still open for the full, half and the relay. Runners can still sign up at the Expo on Friday night or Saturday. She noted that this race is “A big time marathon in a small town” making it a special race. “Both the community involvement and the iconic course make this race so legendary,” she added.

Our Conversation With Jen A. Miller. Author of “Running, A Love Story”

We were fortunate enough to have had a wonderful chat with Jen A. Miller, a fascinating NJ-based runner and author. Miller recently penned Running, A Love Story, an absolute must-read for any runner or running fan in New Jersey.

Jen certainly has an impressive resume. She had previously published The Jersey Shore: Atlantic City To Cape May to rave reviews and has also contributed to Runner’s World, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The New York Times, New Jersey Monthly and many more. She also exudes a true passion for the sport of running. “Running made my life better; Mind body and soul.” she explained to us as we chatted about her new book. She also added that “Running is what you make of it. You get what you put in.”  jenmiller2

A self proclaimed “middle of the pack runner,” this book has a little bit of everything. It’s a funny, thought-provoking and inspirational story ideal for any athlete to enjoy. The legendary …

Congrats To All The Runners Who Ran Boston

Yesterday, marked the 120th running of the Boston Marathon. We salute everyone who participate  in this event, arguably the pinnacle of  the running world. We also wanted to especially congratulate our friends at Runners High NJ who we saw on TV a handful of times donning their proud purple colors and making NJ proud.

We also wanted to congratulate the 21 survivors of the Marathon bombings three years ago. Their spirit & resiliency to return to this challenging course was nothing short of remarkable. Kudos to all!…

This Saturday’s RunAPalooza

For many, this Saturday’s RunAPalooza marks the start of the race season. Thousands will flock to one of our hippest shore town’s for not 1, but 3 incredible races.  The Asbury Park Half, the Jersey Shore Relay and the Jersey Shore 5K all make up this legendary collection of races. All registration is closed at this point, so if you haven’t registered yet, go out and cheer.

While the Half marathon and he 5k both start and end in Asbury Park, the Relay sends 5-person teams up the coast from Seaside to Asbury.  The early forecast looks promising and we wish all the runners the best of luck. This event is truly a blast…enjoy some pics from last year…

The Super Bowl Of Running?

The Super Bowl…It may be America’s greatest tradition. We all get together with friends and family, stuff our faces with chicken wings and Bud Lights, gamble, laugh at commercials and enjoy watching the sport WE invented. What could possibly be better?

As a runner, I often wondered if that same tradition could ever be passed onto running. Would there ever be a day in which friends gathered together, huddled around a TV & screamed and yelled for a running race?

At first, I would say “No Way”. Running has the unique distinction of being basically un-watchable. Most of us could watch 9 hours of football on a Sunday and not have the slightest inkling to want to go out and tackle someone (thankfully). Similarly, we could watch all 7 games of the World Series without feeling the slightest urge to go out and play catch.

However, on the rare occasion that a running event is broadcasted on TV, I (like …

Hey Santa, All I Want Is Running Gear!!!

As runners, there is one thing we all want…more running stuff. New shoes, hand warmers for the winter, GU’s, headbands, socks…you name it – we want it. So, if you are looking for last minute Christmas gifts for the runner on your list, a gift card to a LOCAL running store is the perfect stocking-stuffer.

Our advice…avoid a running store if it’s in a mall and head somewhere local.  Our favorite spots are Runner’s High in Freehold and Metuchen.  runners_high

In the meantime, have a great Christmas!!!…

4 Things To Know About This Weekend’s Philly Marathon

It’s the city of brotherly love and the home of 2 amazing races…The Philadelphia Marathon and Half Marathon. Here are 4 things you should know:

1 The kids at Drexel University are amazing. What’s better than hundreds of pajama-clad students cheering your name at the crack of dawn? drexel

2 Channel your inner Rocky Balboa! Apparently, there was some boxing movie in the 1970’s about some guy from Philadelphia. It’s known for some of the most exciting running footage ever. When you need a little extra motivation, channel your inner Italian Stallion and run tough. mr balboa

3 Start Last…As mediocre/middle of the pack runners, we accidentally came up with a brilliant strategy that improved our running forever. At the 2008 Philly Marathon, we arrived late (thanks to my 1997 Ford Ranger for not starting that morning). So we ended up having to start the race dead last..and it was the best idea ever. Normally we would start races in the middle …
