As a proud New Jersey-ian, two things we love to boast about include our state’s spectacular view of The Statue of Liberty as well as the magnificent skyline of NYC. Both will be featured prominently in this Sunday’s Newport Liberty Half Marathon 2014 sponsored by BATS Global Markets. Not only did this race mark #2 on our best races in New Jersey list, but this year promises to be even better.
The backdrop of the race is nothing short of breathtaking. Not only do you stare at lady liberty and the epic skyline for most of the course, but it also meanders past the Hudson River on what is expected to be a picturesque late summer day. The early weather report is ideal for a late summer/early fall run with modest temps, a slight breeze and no rain predicted.
The course for this year (the 21st year of the race) is very flat and fast, so it may be your best run of the year. It may also serve as the perfect tune-up for your fall marathon or it’s a perfect race as a stand-alone.
We spoke to race director Rob Barwick, who took a pause from his preparation to chat with us this week. Barwick mentioned that over 3,000 runners are expected and spaces are still available. He also mentioned that folks should arrive early and encourages everyone to soak up the course’s beauty, noting that it should be a great day for both runners and spectators.
Several of us at RunJersey.com participated in last year’s half and the event was one of our favorite runs ever. It served as the perfect catalyst for the fall marathon season and the views were the best we’ve ever seen. Also, the race pictures taken with the lady liberty in the backdrop were unforgettable.
