The 5 race Jersey Shore Grand Prix Series came to its conclusion this past Monday with the Pier House 5K in Long Branch. Some of the area’s top talent descended on the shore for the 5 races this summer, each with their own flavor and flair. Special congratulations goes out to the loyal runners who completed all 5. And furthermore, a special hats off to McLoone’s restaurants for being the series sponsor.
The series started on Memorial Day with the Spring Lake 5 Race 2 headed north to Red Bank honoring legendary running innovator George Sheehan at the Sheehan Classic . The series midpoint was a 5 mile trek through the streets of Belmar at the Belmar 5. In August, the tie-dye came out for the Asbury Park 5k before wrapping up on Labor Day with the Pier House 5K in Long Branch.
The Men’s series winner was Mike O’Connor, who proudly represents Spring Lake. Mike told us that he begins preparing for the series in January and “looks forward to these races all year”. He added, “All the races are well supported & JSRC does an exceptional job”. He also appreciates the spacing between the 5 events, to give his body a chance to recuperate. Mike edged out Shore AC’s Andrew Brodeur to take the series title.
On the Women’s front, Kellee Hand formerly of Howell and currently running with Shore AC, proudly took the series crown. The current Manhatten-ite planned her summer vacations to not miss any of these races. Kellee and her family have been involved in these races for years, so it means a great deal to compete in them. She does most of her training in New York’s Central Park, however she makes it a point to return to her roots and run the Shore area regularly.
Whether you took the the series title or battled you way to completing 1 race, we at RunJersey.com applaud your efforts this summer. We were so touched and flattered to be able to cover the entire series this year in our inaugural summer. We hope our mascot, Jogsey, provided you with a little inspiration and can’t wait to do it all again next summer!!!!!
