George Sheehan… a man that truly exemplifies greatness in the sport we all love. This weekend’s George Sheehan Classic 5K was an event that certainly lived up to the legend. Many participants that we spoke with felt that this race was a special one, a sentiment that we certainly agreed with. The runners generally seemed prideful to run in a race that celebrates a running legend with local ties.
The festivities kicked-off Friday afternoon with an Expo at Marine Park (to which we were so grateful to be invited to). A handful of vendors and sponsors were on hand and an air of excitement was undeniable. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate for Friday’s kids races, however Phil, Penny and the awesome team at JSRC did a great job. They ensured that everyone was kept safe despite some intense weather that quickly approached the park.
Saturday’s event also did not disappoint. Shortly after 7 AM, hundreds descended on Red Bank for what would be a perfect race on a perfect day. The highlight for some may have been the heartfelt words spoken by Micheal Sheehan, George Sheehan’s son, who spoke about his father’s vision and impact on the running community. Conditions were ideal for a summer race as a gentle breeze danced through the starting coral and temps were ideal for a race.
Andrew Brodeur (above) of Brick (originally) took the tape for the men. We caught up with him and he shared his thoughts, “This race is special. I’ve learned about Dr Sheehan a lot in the past few years. His insight was incredible. Even though they were written back then, his writings are relevant today.”
Those remarks were shared by Kevin Dolan (below), who left his Nazareth, PA home at 4AM this morning to attend this race. Kevin loved the scenery, the course and even the hill. “I make the long trek over to the Jersey Shore for a race just about every weekend. I just prefer running here.”
This race, perhaps more than any other, was about the participants. Dr. Sheehan would have been proud to witness the nearly 1,500 runners stride to greatness this weekend. Congrats to everyone who participated or spectated and a huge hats off to the Jersey Shore Running Club for coordinating a flawless event. Enjoy some pictures form the race and check back all week as we will post tons more as well. Check here for tons of pictures from the “Jogsey Cam”, our Giant Green Mascot that (hopefully) provided some inspiration for the runners prior to their final kick.
