Night Of Milers Showcases Top HS Talent

The RunJersey.com staff found ourselves in familiar territory this Thursday night… The MAC at Monmouth University for the Shore Running Experience Night Of Milers. The speedy indoor track hosted some of the best milers in the state, including a strong turn-out of High School talent.

The event, which started 5 years ago as a small showcase of local Monmouth county high schools, has evolved to feature more than 300 athletes from around the state. The 18-heat field was made up of local runners, coaches, college athletes and former college stars going shoulder-to-shoulder with the scholastic speedsters. Schools came from as far away as Newton and Haddonfield to be a part of the action.

DeFilippis in good spirits!

This superbly-organized event was co-sponsored by Runner’s High stores of Metuchen and Freehold. We caught up with organizer & owner Rob DeFilippis, who took a moment away from coaching to share his thoughts on the event. “It’s evolved into something great and we are happy to be here supporting the local running community. And most importantly, all the kids are having fun here.”

The action was MC’d by Monmouth Head Coach Joe (Bob Costas has nothing on me) Compagni who brilliantly orchestrated the event. Joe’s positive energy and out-right class proved to be an inspiration to ALL the runners, regardless of ability level.

Remarkable grit and determination were on display from runners in all the heats. The overall best time for the men was turned in by former RBR and TCNJ star, Dennie Waite. The Garden State Track Club member outlasted a relentless field to take the tape in the meet’s final heat.

As he caught his breathe, Waite modestly shared his thoughts with us, “It’s a great meet. The Runner’s High guys do such a good job putting it together. It’s just a lot of fun.” Waite said the mile is his favorite distance joking; “It’s the only event I ever have any success in.”

We doubt that and certainly applaud his efforts as well as the impressive performance turned in by Lauren Sapone, who had the fastest female time with a sub 5:00 minute mile.

By all accounts, it was a remarkable meet. It was nice to see so much fans support and a big kudos must go out to all the athletes, particularly the youngsters. Please enjoy the pictures below and kindly check back with us for more pics coming soon!
