We were so fortunate to have had an opportunity to sit down and talk with Pope Francis while he was in Philly. Many people may not realize what a huge runner the Pope is, so we chatted with him (and his translator) to learn more.
RunJersey.com: So, Pope-ster, tell us about your visit to the states so far?
Pope Francis: It’s been great so far. The 3 cities I’ve been to seem like kick-ass places to run.
RunJersey.com: How has your running been going over the last few years, since you’ve become the Pope?
Pope Francis: Well, to be honest, I have been running much slower. I think it’s mainly due to the large hats I have to wear all the time. They slow me down and the robes aren’t easy to run in either.
Pope Francis: Ohh yeah, absolutely. If I ever need a little something extra, especially late in a long race, the big man upstairs is just a quick prayer away. I can always ask God for a little extra speed. Or I can ask him to have my rival cramp up or hit the wall. It’s a nice advantage to have on race day.
RunJersey.com: Do you have a vice or something you do to reward yourself after a tough week of training & preaching?
Pope Francis: Yeah for sure. After a tough week, I hit the sacramental wine pretty hard.
RunJersey.com: Any advice for the runners here in the US?
Pope Francis: Yes, a few things. First off, make sure you enjoy it every time; do what you to do to have fun out there and enjoy yourself. Also, be nice to each other…smile at your fellow runner. Be encouraging when you see others on the race course, in the park or on the road.
RunJersey.com: Any last words?
Pope Francis: Stay off the treadmills. The world that God built is so beautiful. Quit your gym membership and go out and see it.
RunJersey.com: Thanks for the time, Frank The Tank.
Pope Francis: No Prob. Popein’ Ain’t Easy!
