Congrats To All The Jersey Runners Who Completed This Weekend’s Chicago Marathon

The windy city was no match for a handful Jersey runners this past weekend as many made the trek to Chi-town for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Below are some pics from the event.

We truly applaud you all for completing this iconic 26.2 mile event. Now you can recuperate, sleep and eat some deep dish pizza!

Race Preview: This Sunday’s LBI 18 Miler

Are you doing a fall marathon? If so, you absolutely need to do the LBI 18 Miler this Sunday! Even if you aren’t doing a fall full, this race is one that will give you some serious bragging rights to your running peers.

The race enters its 43rd (that’s right, forty-third) year. It was started to commemorate the Israeli athletes slain by terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics and also pays respect to the thousands who lost their loves on September 11th.

In addition to the great causes the race honors, the 18-mile distance and the amazing setting provide for a perfect race! The race course extends the full length of LBI from South to North, finishing at the Barnegat lighthouse.

We caught up with Mike Thompson, race organizer from the St. Francis Community Center to get his thoughts. …

The NYC Marathon/Halloween Dilemma

For many runners (especially those from NJ), the NYC Marathon is the pinnacle of their running career. Running the streets of the world’s greatest city alongside 50,000 others is a “bucket-list” race for many. The sea of cheering fans create a race environment like no other on the planet. I’m getting goose bumps just thinking about it.

This year’s marathon promises to be another unforgettable one for the athletes. One small problem…it’s November 1st… the day after Halloween. That presents a big problem for many runners.

A three-person running team, all fans of RunJersey.com, brought this to our attention a few weeks back. They are in a real conundrum since they are all mothers. Collectively, the trio has 10 kids between them, ranging in age from 4-12; prime Halloween age.

The question they have to answer is…Trick or treating with the kids OR rest up the day before the marathon?   …

Our Interview With Pope Francis

We were so fortunate to have had an opportunity to sit down and talk with Pope Francis while he was in Philly. Many people may not realize what a huge runner the Pope is, so we chatted with him (and his translator) to learn more.

RunJersey.com: So, Pope-ster, tell us about your visit to the states so far?

Pope Francis: It’s been great so far. The 3 cities I’ve been to seem like kick-ass places to run.

RunJersey.com: How has your running been going over the last few years, since you’ve become the Pope?

Pope Francis: Well, to be honest, I have been running much slower. I think it’s mainly due to the large hats I have to wear all the time. They slow me down and the robes aren’t easy to run in either.

RunJersey.com: That certainly makes sense. Does being Pope have any advantage for your running career? pope 2

Pope Francis: Ohh yeah, absolutely. If …

It’s Back…The Walpack Wilderness Challenge! This Saturday!

The Walpack Wildeness Challenge…What is it about this race that everybody loves so much??? We had to find out, so we made our way to Sussex County last summer for this event. And WOW, were we impressed! We felt like we were in the wrong time zone.

Besides being so rural and so remarkably beautiful, it was one of the most exciting races we did last year. It’s a strong candidate for our Top 10 Races in NJ feature coming soon.

Some love the run-bike-run format.  walpack2000

Others love the gorgeous country setting. “I feel like I’m in Montana.” one runner told us last year.

Others appreciate the isolation of it. After all, there is nothing more soul searching than climbing a big hill alone!

Whatever the reason, it’s become a favorite for many runners who want something exciting, challenging and of course…..fun! This year, the event features two incredible races.

The Walpack Wilderness Challenge presents a unique distance,

Newport Half…A Scenic, Historic And Speedy 13.1 Miles

It was hard not to be nostalgic while running this weekend’s T-Mobile Newport Half Marathon. The course provided tons of unforgettable views of the New York City skyline on a perfect day for a late-summer half.

Much of the race course meandered it’s way through Liberty State Park, which is an easy place to fall in love with. Runners were treated to a perfect view of Lady Liberty as she stood proudly in the water, sun glistening off her back. They also trotted past Ellis Island, providing many runners with a reminder of what millions went through to come to America.

But this race was about much more than just nice views and rich history. It was about great runners putting forth incredible efforts. The race was the USATF NJ Half Marathon Championships for Men’s, Women’s and Masters which brought out some of the best and brightest talent in the Garden State. …

Sunday’s T-Mobile Newport Half…Greatest Scenery You’ll Ever See On A Racecourse

As the leaves begin to turn and the temperature drops, distance season begins to heat up.

This Sunday marks one of our favorite races of the year…The T-Mobile Newport Half Marathon is a flat, fast course that brings out some the best talent in the state for a perfect late-summer half.

This event also boasts some of the prettiest views you will ever see on a race course. Meandering through the Jersey City waterfront, the course makes it’s way through the iconic Liberty State Park where runners can see picturesque views of Ellis Island, the NYC skyline and Lady Liberty.

For many, it serves as the perfect tune-up run for a fall marathon, but we believe it’s a can’t-miss race on it’s own. We spoke with co-race director Robert Barwick, who shared his thoughts with us.…
