It’s one the most iconic races of the year…The Belmar 5. It’s been a summer classic for nearly 4 decades and there is still time for you to register.
Last year, nearly 3000 runners made their way to one of the best shore towns for a perfect ocean-side run. This year, race organizer Phil Hinck is expecting even more. After all, what’s better than a great 5 mile race, a quick stop at Bar A and a day at the shore?
This race attracts elites and average Joe’s alike. It also marks stop #3 of 5 in the Jersey Shore Grand Prix Series and the standings are beginning to take shape. Last year, 2 Philadelphians, Cameron Marantz & Alfredo Santana, ran 1-2 in an impressive 25:02 and 25:03 in the Men’s race to give the Keystone State bragging rights. Meanwhile Spring Lake’s Sarah Cummings represented the locals well capturing the female title in 27:44. This year, it’s time for NJ to take back the crown on our home turf.
It’s more than just race, the Belmar 5 also includes a great expo, Friday night kids races at Silver Lake Park, a fast & flat Saturday race & (most importantly) a post race party at Bar A. Ohh yeah…and their is a beach nearby too!
Since 2002, the Belmar Five Mile run has been held in memory of long-time Belmar resident, Johnny Cobb. In addition to being an originator of the race, he had a 25-year career in the Belmar Police Department, was a member of the Belmar Fire Dept. and was a graduate and supporter of the St Rose School, and promoted local sports all of his life.
In addition to the fire company, Goodwill Hose Company No 1, additional groups receiving contributions from the event are local running clubs, soccer teams, Belmar Junior Lifeguards, and other organizations.
