Tragic News From The Running Community

West Milford Township, Passaic County, NJ   According to News 12 NJ, as well as several other news sources, a Rutgers University student was attacked and killed by a black bear while hiking on Sunday. The student, Darsh Patel of Edison, was hiking with friends at Apshawa Preserve in West Milford, NJ. This is the first reported fatal attack by a bear in New Jersey in over 150 years, according to Larry Ragonese of the NJ DEP.

Certainly, our thoughts and prayers go out to the young man’s family, friends, as well as the entire Rutgers University community. Our website is generally focused on more positive and upbeat topics surrounding the world of running and fitness. However, we felt this is an important development effecting the running community that we felt we should share with our readers. We will pass along any safety precautions or recommendations from the DEP as they develop.
